Our Story

OUR STORY

Joy Oi is founded in Wellingtons eastern suburbs by two long time friends with different cultural backgrounds who shared the same love for coffee. Chris who lived and worked in Vietnam for 7 years missed the taste of the country's home brew when coming back to his mother land of Aotearoa. He found it impossible to find this style of coffee in his hometown Wellington. While meeting up with his old-time friend Allan over a pint and some banter both thought “Why don’t we bring Vietnamese coffee to New Zealand and the world” so Joy Oi was born.

The Joy Oi philosophy is simple “FROM VIETNAM TO YOUR CUP” We pride ourselves in bringing Vietnams unique coffee specialties, blends and roasts to consumers around New Zealand and the world. Joy Oi is a strong believer in fair trade, organic small farming, economic fairness and education.

 

All of joy oi products are grown by small individual land holders, growers and roasted in Vietnam. This process of growing and roasting to our international standard allows our growers and farmers to upskill and add more value to their beans. Joy Oi believes in educating our farmers and growers with western techniques and systems to add more value to their bean. With our “FROM VIETNAM TO YOUR CUP” philosophy, we are able to bring the highest quality with the lowest prices for coffee to our customers by removing the middle man.

JOY Oi SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

We don’t just believe in looking after the planet in everything we do, we believe education is the key to looking after the planet.

 

Joy Oi devotes a percentage of profit to English language attainment for the citizens in the local communities and provides full scholarships for less fortunate households recognized by the Vietnamese government to attend schools and higher education.

HOW JOY OI COFFEE IS MADE

Vietnamese coffee is renowned for its distinctive flavor, and roasting plays a major role in achieving this. Joy Oi only selects the best Robusta and Arabica beans and roasts its coffee beans to a certain temperature and time, which is what gives Joy Oi coffee its flavor and aroma. Joy Oi coffee is usually roasted using the traditional drum-style roaster, which is an environmentally-friendly method that utilizes wood-fired heat to slowly roast the beans.

 

The roasting process produces a higher quality and more flavorful coffee. In addition it also helps to reduce the acidity of the coffee, making it more palatable and enjoyable to drink. The careful bean selection and precise roasting process used by Joy Oi coffee roasters ensures that the flavor and aroma of the coffee are retained, and that joy oi coffee is of a superior quality and taste.
